Emirates Team New Zealand to benefit from innovative product designed by safety specialist Dainese as they tackle the 2017 America’s Cup
Release date: Tuesday 30th May 2017

The Emirates Team New Zealand will benefit from a brand-new innovative product designed by Italian safety specialist Dainese during the 2017 America’s Cup, as the renowned motorcycling protection company Dainese helps to revolutionise the world of sailing.

Normally known for their clothing and safety solutions in motorcycling, Italian firm Dainese is helping to revolutionise sailing as “Official Safety Partner” to Emirates Team New Zealand for the 2017 America’s Cup.

Using premier bike racing class MotoGP as their testing ground, Dainese uses the racing environment to develop and test their revolutionary safety technology, before incorporating it into motorcycle clothing for the mass market around the world.

This passion to bring innovative safety solutions to sporting markets led Dainese to create the SEA-GUARD, after realising that the extreme conditions facing sailing crews in events such as the America’s Cup, which sees them exposed to over 50 knots, is similar to those experienced by MotoGP riders.

The SEA-GUARD is the first item of protective clothing specifically designed for competitive sailing and provides, in addition to its floating function, impact protection and also allows complete freedom of movement for next generation grinders, who use leg-power to operate winches – instead of arm-powered winch grinding.

SEA-GUARD is the only ergonomic and comfortable solution designed to optimise crew performance. It incorporates an aerodynamic motorcycle hump, together with oxygen tank housing, as well as on-board communication devices.

Cristiano Silei, CEO of Dainese Group
“A unique project of its kind that has enabled us to put the Italian passion for innovation and performance in support of a partner of excellence. Dainese has always made safety in dynamic sports its mission. The constant commitment of our research and development teams over these months of preparation and the partnership with Emirates Team New Zealand have allowed us both to overcome a new challenge and to apply our acquired know-how in extreme circumstances different to those with which we have been well acquainted for 45 years.”

Max Sirena, Technical Advisor and Management member of Emirates Team New Zealand
“With the advent in the last few years of AC catamarans, the sailing world has evolved to unprecedented levels. Now in our partnership with Dainese, speed and safety go hand in hand. It is the first time that safety, floating, protection and aerodynamics have been combined, all of which contribute to improving our performance on the water. With “flying” catamarans, every detail, from boat to clothing, makes for faster sailing.”

Emirates Team New Zealand
Emirates Team New Zealand challenging for the 35th America’s Cup to be sailed at Bermuda in 2017 is the most successful team in recent America’s Cup history. Winner of two America’s Cups (1995 and 2000), a finalist and Louis Vuitton Cup winner a further three times, Emirates Team New Zealand is the breeding ground for the world’s top sailors. The only team to ever compete in both the America’s Cup and the Volvo Ocean Round the World Race, Emirates Team New Zealand continued to diversify competing in events such as the Audi MedCup and the Extreme Sailing Series, further enhancing its reputation as a truly global entity. The team had its beginnings in the New Zealand Challenge team which contested the 1987 America’s Cup event, sailed at Fremantle, Western Australia. It is the only commercially funded sailing team to survive from the last multi- challenger America’s Cup event raced at Valencia in 2007. With some of the best sailors, most innovative designers and boat builders in the world, combined with the vision and leadership of Grant Dalton, Emirates Team New Zealand remains at the forefront of international sailing.
